While some drone manufacturers focus on extending RC range, more advanced drone builders are equipping their drones with abilities to tap into other communication channels unleashing them for their full capabilities. UAV satellite communications are also great for live-streaming back to headquarters.
We found 3 teams from different parts of the world hacking their drones to do things that the large satellite organizations are still trying to figure out.
MAVLab’s Paparazzi – Delft University of Technology
This team has created a board that you can attach to your drone, giving you the ability to control & communicate with a Parrot Bebop via the Iridium satellite network.
Satellite Phone Store Team + DJI Mavics
The Satellite Phone Store goes all over the world setting businesses up with satellite communication solutions. They help in maritime, aviation, forestry, utility, government & more. Their clients also include asset managers & surveyors which both could benefit from drone photography & video in their own ways.
Thales Alenia Space – Offshore Surveillance UAVs
Believe it or not, international waters are dangerous. From devastating storms to rouge pirates, danger can catch freight ships, fishing boats, and yachts off guard. Satellite connected UAVs provide better surveillance and far aerial views giving your vessel safe passage to its destination.
We are impressed with the ways teams from all around the world are utilizing today’s technologies. Keep up the great work!
If you know of any other teams that should be added to this list, please let us know!
